How to Layer your Winter Style – cheat notes!

With the winter chill finally setting in, it was with good timing that we had our Winter Layering and Scarf Tying Salon Session at Good Day Girl HQ. Thank you for coming along – it was fab to see you all tying your scarves!

Here are the cheat sheets on how to layer up!

SHOW ME THE LAYERS! Avoid looking blocky and thickety thick by…..

  • Under tops can be seen poking out from jackets and jumpers
  • Shirts can be seen, collars, cuffs, tails and all
  • Hello half-tuck shirt or top helps to break up the pieces
  • The longest piece doesn’t have to be the last piece you put on (pop a short jacket over a longer line coat)

ONE HUE, IT’S ONLY YOU!

Have a favourite colour? Then stick to it in all its shades. Greys, navy, black, winter whites or dare to dream burgundy. One colour is undeniably chic.

  • Blend the textures
  • Doesn’t have to be matchy matchy colour, can be slightly off eg: dusty pink with burgundy
  • Go either top fitted, bottoms loose or top loose and bottoms fitted
  • More is good: add the scarf in the same colour, add a hat or gloves, your handbag, socks and shoes – the whole shebang

CLASH N’ ROLL

If you need to break out of your hue-on-hue then do it with a bang! Clash your patterns and prints. Look to Gucci for inspiration but here are some solid combos. Trick is to keep it in the same tone.

  • Stripes on stripes
  • Floral and graphics
  • Pattern on pattern
  • Spots and stripes
  • Animal and floral

TEXTURE, TEXTURE – READ ALL ABOUT IT!
Winter is the best time to play with textures: cotton, denim, wool, chunky knits, checks and tartans, leather, shirling  – mix it up and have some fun.

  • Wear them as separate pieces
  • Denim is always a good base
  • Don’t overdo one particular texture

COLOUR LOVER

Choose your spice! If your fav colour doesn’t work close to your face, then don it on the bottom. Add a hit through:

  • Coloured pants
  • Coloured top
  • Accessories and tights

LAYERING TRICKS

Waist Action - Whether it’s cinching over your coat and poncho or showing a little bit of belt action through your layers, it’s good to flash a little waisted form.

Show some skin - Roll up the sleeves and unbutton the shirting or show some ankle

COATS + JACKETS

  • Two coats instead of one
  • Statement Coat: dumb it down with casual underneath, jeans, tone the jacket down for a cool day time look
  • Long line coats over wide leg pants
  • Sleeveless jacket

Thank you for these great layering ideas – the images really help. I particularly like the ‘One hue…’ styles!
